A marine communication concept developed in a course on design for extreme-environment scenarios. Images show concept visualizations.

A two-part, two-way communication system for instructors and riders, with hands kept on the bar. VOX voice activation and active wind-noise filtering remove the need to press a button to transmit.

The instructor unit, X1 Base, combines a channel wheel, control knob and transflective LCD. The rider unit, X1, mounts on a life vest strap with a 360-degree adjustable clip, anchoring loop and double-press SOS button.

Single, group and emergency broadcast modes. Concept specifications: LoRa with a 2 km open-sea range, Li-Po 3000mAh battery and IP68 protection.

The process includes interviews with a sailing instructor and three riders, user journey mapping, sketches, CAD configuration and colour, material and finish development.
